One of the ailments that Dalmatians do contend with is deafness. Prior to this knowledge, some early Dalmatian breeders thought the breed to be slow or not intelligent. This was until they realized that some of the dogs were born without being able to hear. It has been found that this disorder tends to run in animals that are lightly pigmented. This may affect one or both ears. Puppies can be tested as early as five weeks of age. Reputable breeders will not breed any dog that carries this disease in an attempt to eliminate or at least diminish the existence of the ailment.
Dalmatian breeders will interview every possible owner of their puppies. If the dog will not be used as a show dog, then the breeder will suggest that the dog be spayed or neutered. Some breeders will have the dog spayed or neutered prior to selling them. They will also make sure that the Dalmatian puppy will make a good fit for you and your family. Owning a dog is a great responsibility, and the owner will want to know that you are able to afford the care of the animal as well as extend the needed/ required time and love that these special dogs deserve.
