Dalmation Rescues

The Dalmatian is a breed of dog that has a very interesting history and a beloved place in today’s world as well. The breed was originally used as a guard dog and as a hunter for small animals like rats. They were also used as firehouse dogs because they get along with horses extremely well. They would guard the horses and even go along with the firemen to help rescue people. Nowadays, they are more or less the mascot of fire stations and many firemen keep them as pets to honor their breeds past contributions. Sadly though, many of these dogs end up in a Dalmatian rescue.

There are several reasons that people abandon their Dalmatians. One is that they are very energetic as puppies and on average, 50% of people do not keep them for longer than their first year. This fact is made even worse by the fact that there are “puppy mills” that try and cash in on the popularity of the breed by producing as many puppies as possible. A Dalmatian rescue will work to keep the casualties of these mills down and make sure the puppies are healthy and trained before they go back into a household. Luckily, the puppies do grow out of this highly active stage and develop into wonderful pets.

Many Dalmatian rescues are using foster homes as their main way of hosing the dogs. This lets the dogs get used to the environment and lets the transition from foster home to permanent home be smoother. Dalmatians are very loyal dogs and have a great sensitive side. If you decide to purchase a Dalmatian from a rescue, then you know that you are getting a healthy dog that has been trained and tested to make sure there are no bad behavioral traits.

Dalmatians love to run and they need to be frequently exercised. Another reason that the dogs end up in a Dalmatian rescue is that their owners were unable to meet their needs and gave up. If you are active and take the dog on a run frequently or have a large yard for it to play in, then you should be fine. The dogs love companionship as well, and you should make a point to spend time with them. If you meet their needs, you are going to have a great companion that will be around for years to come.
